Recently I asked what myths people would like me to bust and a number of you asked about collagen supplements (inner beauty) and collagen in skincare.⠀
⠀
Collagen is a protein that is extremely important in helping bind tissue together like glue. Collagen is a living part of our body, and I emphasis “living” as in its living form it gives our skin and body its elasticity and support. Like all parts of the body, collagen needs nutrients to work at its best from plant phyto nutrients such as vitamin C and polyphenols. These are either delivered through pure skincare or consumption of vegetables or fruits. It’s that simple.
⠀
When ‘collagen’ is found in supplements or skincare products it isn’t actually collagen. The reason is simply that these products can not contain a living part of our body. This so-called collagen is either crushed cartilage from dead animals or fish (marine collagen). It is the broken-down components of collagen (protein) called amino acids. I am also very concerned what else is in these products as being from an animal carcass what else is also crushed and included? ⠀
⠀
The reasoning behind adding this type of ingredient is bizarre to me. It’s like saying if you want strong healthy finger and toenails eat or apply nail clippings from animals.⠀
⠀
And before you ask, ‘vegan’ or ‘vegetarian’ collagen is no better, in fact- it doesn’t technically exist. These types are made from genetically modified yeast and bacteria and only contain a minute amount of the benefits needed to be effective. It’s like comparing a tyre to a car, it’s only a small part of the running vehicle. ⠀
⠀
So if you really want healthy collagen, feed it, don’t eat it.
