Over the past few weeks, I have been asked my opinion on facial masks and the benefits they may have for the skin. Unfortunately, after reviewing the many types currently on the market I have come to the conclusion that this type of product has no benefit to the well-being of the skin.
Our body and skin need to breath and smothering it with synthetic compounds, plasticisers and known skin irritants from essential oils and fragrances is not going to do your skin any good in the long run. Your skin may feel hydrated once the mask is removed. The reason for this is that the ingredients in the mask are pulling the moisture to the surface which dehydrates the lower skin layers. Presently, there are 4 categories of facial masks on the market:
This is the latest trend where a cotton sheet is soaked in a solution of ingredients that your skin needs. Looking at the ingredient lists, many brands offering this type of product all contain fragrances, essential oils, petrol-chemical glycols and synthetic emulsifiers.
A good example of this type of product is the charcoal or gold masks. Both charcoal and gold are inert substances thus will have no benefit to the skin. These products contain all of the above ingredients in the sheet masks plus plasticisers which you would find in industrial glues or hair sprays along with a flammable solvent such as ethanol. It’s like melting plastic on your skin and then pulling it off. Ouch.
These types of products contain similar ingredients again to the above. They also including gelling agents such as xanthum gum and cellulose which absorb moisture to create the gel like appearance of the product. The issue here is as the gel mask hardens after application it also is drawing out the moisture of the skin.
This product would be oldest and longest on the market and probably the best as it uses clay from the earth to create the mask. These products also contain similar ingredients to the sheet masks with the inclusion of clay and will draw moisture from the skin thus causing issues outlined above.
